This position will contribute to development and maintenance of solutions to support continued development of NCBI’s Sequence Read Archive (SRA) – the world premier archive of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data and is a part of international collaboration that includes archives in Europe and Japan. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) collaborated with publishers and scholarly societies to expand access to coronavirus-related journal articles in PubMed Central (PMC), a digital archive of peer-reviewed biomedical and life sciences literature. Through this collaboration, more than 50 publishers made more than 350,000 coronavirus-related articles accessible under various article-level license terms through the PMC COVID-19 Collection (previously the PMC COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Initiative). This collaboration made a significant collection of coronavirus-related information immediately accessible to researchers to accelerate discoveries about COVID-19.

The NIH Preprint Pilot has accelerated and expanded broad discovery of NIH-funded research results relating to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and COVID-19. This finding comes from a new preprint authored by staff at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and made available in bioRxiv. A project of NLM, the NIH Preprint Pilot was launched to explore new approaches to increase the discoverability of NIH-supported research results and gain a better understanding of perceptions and practices regarding preprints.

The National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) have released a set of standard transcripts for 99% of human protein coding genes and 99.8% of genes of clinical relevance. This set, part of the Matched Annotation from NCBI and EMBL-EBI (MANE) collection, harmonizes transcript and protein sets produced by this joint genome annotation effort.

The 2020 MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) vocabulary was evaluated for inclusion in the Classification index. Several additions and changes were made to the Index and Schedules based on this review. All main index headings are now linked to the 2020 vocabulary in the MeSH Browser. A mini-systematic review of the W 775-867 Medicolegal Examination section was conducted. Additional minor updates were made to the Index and Schedules.

The History of Medicine Division at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) announces its 2020 NLM History Talks. All talks are free, open to the public, and held in the NLM Lister Hill Auditorium, building 38A located on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. NLM, through its GenBank® sequence database, is providing the biomedical community free and easy access to genome sequences from the novel coronavirus associated with the recent outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan, China. The outbreak was declared a global health emergency on January 30, 2020 and GenBank® continues to rapidly release data associated with this outbreak as it comes in and welcomes sequence data submissions as well.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce the future plans of its 2018-2019 class of Associate Fellows. The Associate Fellowship Program is a one-year postgraduate training program with an optional second year. This competitive program provides associates with a broad foundation in health sciences information services and prepares librarians for future leadership roles in health sciences libraries and health services research. This group of Associate Fellows recently ended the first year of their fellowship. Three will continue for second year fellowships at health sciences libraries in the United States: at Lane Medical Library, Stanford University; Strauss Health Sciences Library, University of Colorado, and at the Taubman Health Sciences Library, University of Michigan. Two of the Associate Fellows will take positions at libraries in the Washington DC area: one at the National Agricultural Library and one at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Donald A.B. Lindberg, M.D., who served as the director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for more than 30 years. He was one of the longest-serving leaders at NIH and continued his service as director emeritus of NLM after his retirement in March 2015. Because of his pioneering work in applying computer technology to biomedical research and health information, he is considered by many to be the country’s senior statesman for computers and medicine. Don died on August 16 following a fall; he was 86.

On September 17, 2018, The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Value Set Authority Center (VSAC), in collaboration with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), published an addendum to the eCQM annual update specifications originally published in May 2018.  This addendum updates eCQM value sets for the 2019 reporting period for Eligible Hospitals (EHs) and Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) and the performance period for Eligible Professionals (EPs) and Eligible Clinicians.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH) performs research on computational biology and creates and maintains information systems and computational tools for the biological research community. The Information Engineering Branch (IEB) of NCBI aims to make biomedical data accessible and useful to scientific researchers, those in the public health field, and the general public through efficient and effective modern information technology (IT) practices and innovative design strategies. IEB production web sites are accessed, on average, by more than four million users who view 21 million web pages and download 100 terabytes (TB) of data daily.

NLM Director Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, has announced the appointment of Dina Paltoo, PhD, MPH, as NLM Assistant Director for Policy Development. In this role, she leads NLM’s policy and legislative activities which promote access to scientific data and information, as well as health information technology. Dr. Paltoo had performed the duties in an interim capacity since April 2018 while on detail from the NIH Office of Science Policy (OSP), Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her official appointment took effect July 9, 2018.
